Dr Catherine Sozi, currently Director of the UNAIDS Regional Support Team for Eastern and Southern Africa, has spent over 25 years in public service. Her passion for advancing global health began in England, where she obtained her medical degree from St Marys Hospital Medical School, University of London. She specialised in Family Medicine and has worked in the AIDS and health sector in the United Kingdom and Uganda, within government, the private sector and non-governmental facilities with a focus on HIV prevention and AIDS Care management for men, women and children living with HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health Care for young people and adolescents.
She joined UNAIDS in 2000 and has been the Country Director for Zambia, South Africa and more recently China, working to ensure that communities and people living with HIV are not left behind in the response to HIV and that everyone, adults and children, regardless of who they are, have equal access to life-saving quality HIV services for prevention, treatment and care, in a bid to reach zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths and zero discrimination. She continues to advocate for the UNAIDS idea of shared responsibility and global solidarity by the international community, in addition to encouraging increased ownership of the epidemics by the countries most affected.
Dr Sozi has published and presented papers on several aspects of the AIDS epidemic at national, regional and international meetings. She has served on several national, regional and global-level technical working groups on HIV.
She has been awarded the Philanthropy Leadership Award by the China Social Assistance Foundation in recognition of her “outstanding achievements and persistent dedication to zero AIDS and the public benefits of Africa” and the China-Africa Health Cooperation Award by the China Alliance for South to South Health Cooperation Research for her “exceptional contribution in health cooperation between China and Africa.”
She holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and also holds Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK).
Dr Sozi is fluent in English and Luganda and has learnt some basic Mandarin from her stay in China. She has a son.
