The dried fruit powder of the upside-down tree, the baobab, is super rich in minerals and antioxidants. It is also rich in fibre. It contains vitamin C and minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium. In addition, the fibre in the fruit is a good prebiotic!
To make the baobab drink, you will need….
One large dry baobab fruit without its casing, sugar or honey and water. Optional ingredients are ginger and mint.
To prepare it….
In a bowl, soak the baobab fruit (the seeds and fruit powder) in lukewarm water for a few hours (ideally overnight). Use about 2 cups of water to soak the fruit – depending on the size of the fruit. Once soft, separate the fruit from the seeds with clean hands and strain the juice into a jug. You can also use a clean cloth to strain the juice if you would prefer it less pulpy.
How to enjoy it….
Add some sugar or honey (according to your taste) and more water to the strained baobab juice or simply enjoy it as a smoothie. If you prefer, also add a bit of freshly crushed ginger. It is preferable to drink it cold after it has been chilled for a while with some mint!
