Enjoyed as a snack or part of a meal, mopane worms (at times spelled as ‘mopani’) are native to most parts of Southern Africa that have warm climates. They provide an important source of protein to countries such as Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
To prepare the mopane worms you will need….
400 grams dried mopane worms, one large onion, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (optional), two or three finely chopped green or red chillies, a pinch or two of salt and vegetable cooking oil.
Start by soaking dried mopane worms in water for about three hours or longer to soften them. Dice the onion and fry it in vegetable oil until tender, then add the chillies and turmeric. Add the drained mopane worms after they have reconstituted and stir fry with the onion, chillies and turmeric until they become softer but still have some crunchiness for a few minutes. Add some salt to taste and enjoy as a snack.
